Kiowa is a county located in south-central Kansas. Containing the cities of Mullinville, Havilan and the county seat, Greensburg, it is named after the Kiowa Indians. The area was first organized in 1884. The first religious meeting houses were established by the Quakers and Methodists in 1885. The first school district, in what was to become the county, was organized in Greensburg also in 1885. The county was formally established in 1886.

There are several interesting events in the county’s history. For example, some townspeople of Greensburg moved the post office from Janesville to Greensburg in the middle of the night while the postmaster was asleep inside. Points of interest in the county include the largest hand dug water well in the world. Completed in 1888, it is now a tourist attraction.

The city of Greenburg is named after a stage coach driver, D.R. “Cannonball” Green who ejected the infamous Carrie Nation from his coach when she took the cigar from his mouth. On May 4, 2007, an EF5 tornado ripped through the county and devastated the city of Greensburg. The city is rebuilding with a goal of living up to its name by using the latest in green technology.

Barclay College is a very interesting school with a rich history in religion coming from the background of the Quaker settlers in 1917. It’s the perfect kind of community school with students and staff members actually developing a family like relationship outside of the classroom.

There is a great program dedicated to studies in Bible/Theology, Business Administration, Sports and Recreational Leadership, Pastoral Ministry, Psychology and Family Studies, and Nursing. If you are looking for the type of small college with a family feel especially in the case of serving your religion, this is definitely the college for you.

In fact, students must attend the services of the chapel on a regular basis for each semester. The services are recording on streams, and can be seen on the website. The major athletics of the school include Soccer, Volleyball, Cross Country, Men’s Basketball, and Women’s Basketball.

One of the best places to stop by during a tour of the campus is the Bear’s Den. It’s where students and staff alike go to hang out, and get some comfort food while watching on the big screen tv or playing some games. It’s a spot on campus that’s also open to the campus.

Located in eastern Kiowa County, the original buffalo hunting grounds of the Kiowa Indians, and founded in 1884, Haviland, Kansas is a small town at its best. With a population of just 624, it is the home of exclusive private Barclay College, a Quaker Friends School dating from 1892. Haviland was founded by Quakers from Indiana. The town is named for Civil War Underground Railroad activist Laura Haviland. Copies of her autobiography can be found today at the college, church and public libraries.

The Haviland area has a significant amount of meteorite deposits connected to the Haviland Crater. This area has archaeological dig sites and the Kansas Meteorite Museum in Haviland.

Nearby in Kiowa County you can visit the Pallasite Meteorite as well as the Lamkin Museum and the Kiowa County Historical Museum. Another must see is the Henry Fromme Round Barn dating from 1912, it is operated by the Kiowa County Historical Society and contains historical displays from the county’s past, including mementos of 1912 farm life in Kansas.

Family entertainment in the area includes the state fishing lake, rodeos, public parks, swimming, golf and tennis. Some of the events you might like to attend are the Antique Thresher Show, The Meteorite Festival, Arts and Crafts Shows and numerous Christmas events.

Being a small town, it is no wonder that Haviland is mostly known for a past visitor known as the Haviland, or Brenham, Crater. As a result of this less than 1,000 year old imprint in Kiowa County, there are meteorites spread throughout Haviland that have a home in science museums everywhere and continue to impress with their variety of unique appearances. The Haviland Meteorite Festival celebrates the event that contributed to putting Haviland on the map.

The festival occurs annually in July of each year. An important part of the festival is, of course, the meteorite digs where family and friends can engage on a search for their very own piece of the “pie.Get more information here. http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/005799.php” Several other activities available at the festival are contests, treasure hunts and raffles to keep everyone busy and having fun throughout the day.

With all the running around, the food vendors provide a delicious break and refuel you for the rest of the day. Concerts are open and available for any music lovers’ enjoyment. The festivities do not end when the sun goes down! You can top your night off with star gazing in the beautiful night sky overhead.

Haviland’s Meteorite Festival only happens once a year and can offer you a rare opportunity to see what impact the Haviland Crater really has on this town and the pride it gives the community.

Located in the small town of Haviland, Kansas lies the campus of Barclay College. What began as a small, Quaker high school with a strong Christian mission in the early 1900′s, has since become a successful four year institution today. The founding father, evangelist and professor, Scott T. Clark, has been fortunate to have a lasting vision for this school. He hoped to provide a Bible Training school for his pupils and his dreams continue to be fulfilled.

In the 1920′s and 1930 ‘s, the school slowly began to carry college courses. By the 1970′s, the school had brought to life their vision of being a complete four year college. Upon graduation, students would have been given the tools to lead a good, Christian life and to provide their leadership skills and services with their gained knowledge. Robert Barclay, the father of Quaker theology, became the namesake of the college in 1990.

Presently, the college offers various degree opportunities as well as ministry degrees. Barclay College has a small, but ever growing, class of 150 students to occupy the simple campus. Students keep busy with the organizations offered by the school and can enjoy the relaxed environment Haviland provides. The school’s success is in its everlasting mission provided by Mr. Clark and his strong faith in Christianity.

With a population of just over 700, Haviland was founded by Quakers from Indiana in 1884. The city gets its name from Laura Haviland who was a leader in the underground railroad. Since the founding of the city most of the inhabitants are born local. With an estimate of only about 9 residents of outside origin. Prominently white (approx. 93) with most of the community being christian. Haviland established its first school for church/seminar in 1892 and has an above average education level with more then 25 having four year degrees and almost all of its residents hold a high school diploma.

Haviland is known for the Haviland or Brenham crater. Over 15,000 pounds of meteorites have been recovered from this site and counting. The crater its self, at only 50 feet in diameter, is one of the smallest in the world. However it is estimated at only 1,000 years old. Because of this, Haviland holds an annual meteorite festival.

With its relatively low natural disaster statistics (there have only been 2 injuries due to tornadoes) and below average crime level, Haviland is a simple but nice place to live. Great education and strong family values are something we should all strive for and Haviland offers.
